Alleygating and working with Police

Councillor John Jones and Adetomi Yemi are working with residents to fund community alleygating schemes for River Ward.

Pictured on the alley between Meadow Bank Road and Hillside Road in Chatham the alley-gating scheme reduces the risk of crime and makes residents feel safer.

Coucillor John Jones was successful in securing the alleygate after speaking with local residents on Hillside and Meadow Bank Road from prior to his election in 2010.

The area has a strong communuty spirit but does suffer from anti-social behaviour.

Commeting on the scheme, Cllr John Jones said

"River ward is the most diverse of any in the Medway towns and there are a number of areas which have been neglected by the Conservatives over the years. I have been working with local residents in this area to deliver on alley-gating"

"Anti-social behaviour blights areas of the ward and it is time we had a tough policy on kerb-crawlers and continue to support the Safe Exit Scheme which has seen success"

"The Tories locally have cut the Kent Police budget, cut magistrate services and have introduced soft sentencing for criminals. We need local representatives that work with the Police and not try and politicise them."

Medway Labour are working to stamp out anti-social behaviour which does impact particular communities in Medway.

Please do get in touch with John if you would like an alley-gating scheme for your road.

  1. If I might also add that these ally gates are in place because of the work of previous Labour Councillors too. It is good to see candidates and councillors getting to other parts of River Ward.

Although I think you are mistaken in believing that there is a 'strong community spirit' there, you are right that the area has been neglected - which is shameful.

As the housing demographic has changed, it would be interesting to see how the voter registration figures compare.

  2. Thanks Anon. There is a transitory population in that area of the ward partly as a result of the social housing which occupies a significant proportion of the residents.

John and others to be fair are trying to drive up voter registration and there was a real effort during the by-election to franchise residents with postal votes. Turnout in the area went up.

More work needs to be done and at a time of fiscal austerity we need to be realistic.

You are right the alleygate scheme was led by Cllr Esterson but John partnered very closely on this scheme. A fact highlighted by Bill Esterson at the time.

  3. It always amuses me to hear how Labour are tough on antisocial behaviour.
Perhaps you could have a word with your Twydall councillors who have, for 9 years, fought tooth and nail to prevent local residents from getting permanent alley gates or even temporary night time gates. Strange really because in 2001 Medway Council approved the installation of permanent gates but withdrew permission after local councillors objected. Councillors stated that they would only support night time gates and tried to get local residents to accept this compromise but this would have been illegal at the time (confirmed by Medway Council). Medway Council later approved night time gating (now legal under the Clean Neighbourhoods Act 2006)but guess what? Local Councillors now refuse to support this measure and permission has again been withdrawn.

  4. I didn't intend to diminish the efforts of the present Cllr Jones (comment 1)as I think he has been a good advocate for all areas in the ward.

I was thinking more of the previous Cllr Jones who was a great help in getting the allygates when there were problems getting the funding.

After 7+ years of tory roadworks, (and other assorted nightmares) it will be interesting to see if they are brave enough to knock on my door between now and May.
